President’s Message

As you read this, A World of Quilts XXXIX has taken place and since I am writing my message in April, I can’t truly say how fantastic it was, but I am sure that it was.  I want to thank everyone who was involved in the show for their awesome work on it.  Chris and Noreen have done a great job organizing it, working through all the problems that arose.  Their leadership helped make its planning run so well.  Additionally, they had a wonderful group of volunteers heading the various show committees.  All of these people put in countless hours carrying out their jobs.  I and the guild thank all of them for their hard work.

Of course now that this year’s show is over, it’s time to start thinking about next year’s show – it will be the 40th anniversary!  I am sure next year’s committee will make it a special celebration.  Some of our advance planning already takes this into consideration.  So, if there is that special quilt you want to make, start it now so you can enter in the show.

Our May meeting is the guild’s Annual Meeting.  We will be voting on two items – the proposed slate of officers for 2018-2019 (minus a President as of now) and the proposed by-laws amendment.  We will also be drawing the tickets for the winner of this year’s raffle quilt and the Bernina sewing machine.  Make sure you attend.

Finally, if you attended Maria Shell’s presentation at our April meeting, I am sure you were disappointed with the quality of the projection of her slides.  The Board has since authorized the purchase of a new projector and we will be using it for our May speaker.  It should be a big improvement.

Notice of Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting of the Northern Star Quilter’s Guild will be held on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at 7:00 p.m., at John F. Kennedy Catholic High School, Somers, New York.

At that Meeting, the membership will vote on the following:

  1. The Board proposal to amend Article XI, Section 2, of the Bylaws to provide that notice of any future Bylaw Amendments will be communicated to the membership by email and not via the US Mail.
  2. The candidates for the NSQG Board for the 2018-2019 Guild year. The candidates are:

Julie Long – VP Communications:  Hello fellow quilters: my name is Julie Long and I am running for VP of communications. I can’t believe I have been a member of NSQG for about 30 years!! One of my first friends was Ann Fitzell, while sitting in the cafeteria of the Somers Middle School. I have quilted on and off during that time, raising my family and now I have more time to devote to my own quilting, as well as being a member of Comfort Quilts. Traditional quilting has always been my favorite style, but I also appreciate the time and talent that goes into other styles of quilting. I look forward to serving on the board again in the capacity of VP of Communications. The guild has brought me many great times and memories, and I look forward to giving back.

Linda Finegan – VP Education:  Linda Finegan has been performing in the Greater New York area for many years. She has played in orchestras all over the world. Highlights of her career have been playing for the Seul Olympics, playing all 33 Verdi operas in Central Park and being a guest artist at the Sarteano Chamber Music Festival in Italy. She played on Broadway in Gypsy, Crazy for You, and Showboat. She premiered Maury Yeston’s Phantom at Westchester Broadway Theatre as well as many other shows there and at the Yorktown Playhouse. She teaches orchestra in the Harrison Central School district.
When it comes to quilting, Linda began by attending a class with her mother that a neighbor was giving. They made a Pennsylvania Dutch Hex quilt together as a result of the class. She quilted off and on through the years doing patchwork then appliqué always hand quilting and wanting to branch out but not knowing how. When her last child went off to college, Linda found NSQG and a whole new world of quilting styles and techniques, which have taken her in lots of new directions.

Rosemary DePaola – VP Membership:  I started quilting in 1997 after the birth of of some of my grandchildren.  I have since made quilts for all 20 of them at this point and still need 2 more quilts for the ones born this spring.
I joined the Guild in October of 2013 with the guidance of my cousin, Barb Sferra.  At that first meeting I met up with friends that I knew from my workplace.  It felt like old home week for me and I immediately joined the Guild.  I also joined Comfort Quilts which has been an amazing experience for me.
I was the Secretary for the Guild for 2 years, 2015 and 2016, and very much enjoyed the inner workings of the Guild.
I am looking forward to being your VP of Membership for the next 2 years.

Helen May – VP Programs:  Having now had the experience of finding guest lecturers and talent to speak at our guild meetings and run workshops, I am pleased to be able to continue for another year.  Being retired, I now have the chance to devote time not only to the guild but also to my own quilting.  I prefer working in the abstract, creating my own patterns, and learning to longarm.
I have really appreciated the wonderful lectures and workshops offered by our guild and have enjoyed expanding our offerings by adding a two day workshop with Maria Shell; of again being able to offer an additional May workshop; and of having the chance to meet some incredible teachers.  I hope to continue to be able to offer a diversified rostrum in the next year.

Debby Warren – Co VP Quilt Show:  Although Debby Warren is a first-year member of the NSQG, she is no stranger to the sewing machine.  She started making her own clothes, under the direction of her mother, when she was only 13 years old.
About 10 years ago, Deb took up quilting and quickly turned into an addict!
Although she’s been quilting for over a decade, she has only managed to keep one of her quilt s for herself, as most of them are gifted to family and friends.  Deb is excited to take on this new challenge as Co-Chair of the 2019 Quilt Show for our  guild.

Daisy Dodge – Co VP Quilt Show:  Daisy Dodge has been a member of the NSQG for 4 years now. An artistic mid-western girl at heart, she started drawing, crafting and selling homemade greeting cards to her family at the age of nine.
A commercial artist by day, Daisy first got bitten by the quilting bug over 26 years ago,   and continues to challenge herself in a multitude of fine arts & crafts.She is super-excited to Co-Chair the 2019 Quilt Show with her long time friend, Deb Warren.

Anne Chehebar – Secretary:  I started sewing as a young girl, making my own dresses, and worked on my first quilt – an English paper-pieced hexagonal quilt – when I was about 14. When I came to the United States from the UK in 1974, I renewed my interest in quilting, sewing small projects mainly as gifts for family and friends. Julie Long encouraged me to join the Guild and, when I retired, I started attending Comfort Quilts.  I have been Secretary of the Guild for the 2017-2018 year.

Annette Nash Govan – Treasurer:  Annette joined NSQG five years ago.  She has served on the board as Special Events Chair and currently as Treasurer.  Her interest in quilting include traditional piecing and machine quilting.  Annette has served as Treasurer in a number of organizations and is currently Treasurer of her church, Antioch Baptist Church where she leads the Quilting and Sewing Ministry. She has a masters in Finance and bachelors in Economics.

Charitable Activities---

Comfort Quilts – Thanks to all who answered the call to make Comfort Quilts for those in need. Your quilts are greatly appreciated.

2019 Charity – Dulce Esperanza Camp will be our charity at the 2019 Quilt Show. The summer camp. run by the Warwick Area Migrant Committee, provides about 100 children with a 7 week program to accommodate the parents who work long hours during the growing season. Established in 1959, this nondenominational organization provides activities in dance and art classes, horticulture and gardening, technology , reading and writing workshops, sports, demonstrations and Field trips. The programs have been designed to offer enrichment activities not typically available to the children. In addition, the camp offers Summer Teaching Internships for Education Majors to lead classroom activities. The camp relies on donations and the money goes directly to serve the children with programs that have a positive impact on their lives. Click on address to get web site – https://wafarmworkers.org

Dulce Esperanza Camp is the only application received by the March deadline. Therefore according to the bylaws, voting by the membership is not necessary.

Please note: If you have received a voucher to enter the show for free because you have fulfilled volunteer hours, you must have it to enter.  The box office is managed by WCSU, not the guild. No voucher = you pay the entrance fee.

We are so appreciative of everyone who has worked on the show – it has proven the adage that if you want something done, ask busy women!

Remember to turn in your raffle tickets, stock up at the Library bargain book table, buy a special Comfort Quilt kit for your own use, bid on your favorite Silent Auction offering, get a show pin, visit the exhibits, see the demos, hear the lecture, shop at all the vendors, and enjoy all the quilts, quilts, quilts!

President’s Message

Normally I would be reporting on a full slate of officers nominated for next year’s Board; however this year the Nominating Committee has been unable to find someone to take on the position of President.  The Committee spoke to nearly 50 members looking for volunteers to fill four open, elected Board positions – President, Quilt Show Chair, Membership, and Education.  We were successful in finding someone for only three of those four offices.

This has caused great concern for me.  Volunteerism is an important factor in our guild’s operation.  It is what makes our annual quilt show so successful and is vital in carrying out our ongoing activities.  It is unfair to expect the same people to step forward to serve on the Board; it should be spread among as many members as possible.

I have had people say to me, “why don’t you just stay on another year?”  While flattered to be asked, it is not something I should be doing.  First of all, our By-laws have specific restrictions as to how many consecutive years a person can hold a position on the Board; this prohibits me from serving a third year as President.  Additionally, I have served on the Board the past 5 years; one as Membership, two as Quilt Show and two as President, and  I will still have another year or two to serve as Ex-Officio President.  While I did not find the jobs to overly time consuming, they did impact my life.  For the past four years in particular, I have had to juggle personal activities around Guild Board and Membership meetings, as well as other events.  I am looking forward to getting that flexibility back in my life.

To address the apprehensions that a job may be too much for a single person, we have used co-chairs for several positions – Quilt Show and Hospitality for example.  While it has not been done with the President’s position, having co-Presidents is something the Board would consider.  Since we need to have a President, at our April Board meeting we will discuss our options for filling the position, even if it is on a temporary basis.

I am once again asking all members to consider becoming President.  You can do this as an individual or you could team up with another member and create a co-Presidency.  You don’t need to have Board experience.  The Guild has detailed policies and job descriptions to guide you.  Additionally, I will be on the Board as Ex-Officio President to help and you also appoint an Assistant to the President to help with tasks.

Please seriously consider helping us in filling the slate of offices for the 2018-2019 year.

Annual Meeting – Election of Board Members and By-Laws Amendment

The Annual Meeting for the Northern Star Quilters’ Guild will be held at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at Kennedy Catholic High School.  At this meeting we will be voting on Officers for 2018-2019 and an amendment to our by-laws.  The specifics of the proposed by-laws’ amendment were sent to all members via the US Postal Service, as well as by email.  The proposed slate of officers follows.

The Nominating Committee is pleased to announce the Slate of Officers for 2018-2019. The nominees will be introduced at the April Guild Meeting and voting will take place at the May Annual Meeting.

Charitable Activities

Stop by the Comfort Quilt Display at our Show.

There continues to be a demand for our Comfort Quilts and those that receive them are very appreciative. Are you able to contribute to this cause? A quick easy way to make a quilt is by using one of the kits that Kathy Keane brings to every Guild meeting. Besides the pattern, the fabric is already cut and ready to use. There are no time requirements. Whenever you can get it finished, there is a child or adult suffering a life threatening illness, severe trauma or other dire circumstances who could use some comfort.

Thanks also to all those who returned their raffle stubs and money to support this year’s charity Emergency Shelter Partnership. You can still turn in your money and tickets at the April Guild Meeting or at the Quilt Show. The drawing will take place at the May Guild Meeting.

See a sampling at the Quilt Show of the many beautiful and colorful Comfort Quilts that are donated to give comfort to those in need. Thanks to all who made quilts or donated fabric to make these outstanding quilts.

President’s Message

Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s Super Saturday so successful. Pooa Bloomberg did a great job organizing the day.  I also want to thank the members who taught the classes – everyone I have spoken to enjoyed their class.  A final thanks to our Hospitality Chairs, Micky Green and Christine Langan for arranging for the food that day. It seems like we have found a home for Super Saturday at the Yorktown Presbyterian Church.  If you participated in a class, bring your work to March for our Show and Tell that meeting.

Once again we had another fun evening at our February meeting with the Ugly Fabric Auction.  A special thanks to our auctioneers, Sandy Bright and Carolyn Lewis, for doing such a good job.  Our sales exceeded last year’s auction!

We also saw all the wonderful Challenge Quilts at the February meeting.  It is always interesting to see how people interpreted the theme.  Thank you to Carla Wdowski for organizing the Challenge and to everyone who submitted a quilt.

Don’t forget to register your quilt for the World of Quilts XXXVIII.  Registration will be open until the end of the month.

In this trunk show you will hear about Julie’s twenty year quilting journey from paper templates cut with a scissors to creating original designs and working as a quilt artist.  Learn about what it took for her to find her voice and see the quilts that have come from that journey.

Strips for Comfort Quilts

If you need to clear some space in your fabric stash (or have some ‘Ugly Fabric’ leftovers), Comfort Quilts is collecting the following sizes in quilting weight cotton only:
– 2.5″ x 41-45″ strips (width of fabric)
– 5″ squares and 10″ squares
Drop off at the CQ table or give to any Comfort Quilter  to deliver, no scraps please. Thank you!

President’s Message

There are a number of things happening this month, so make sure you read through all of the articles in this month’s newsletter for the details.  You can still sign up for a Super Saturday class, it’s a fun day and a great bargain.  There is also room on the Lancaster trip, lots of quilts to see and shopping to do.  We have exciting speakers and workshops coming in March and April – sign up for a workshop.  Don’t forget quilt registration is open.  Register your quilt early.

Our February meeting will also be busy.  This year’s Challenge quilts – Quilts Inspired by Doors – will be on display.  Come and vote for your favorite quilt.  Also, back by popular demand we will be holding the Ugly Fabric Auction.  If you missed last year’s event, make sure you come this year, it was lots of fun.  Don’t forget to bring your dollars!

Finally, I just returned from the Bahamas, and I was excited to see as we drove into town that the local guild, Stepping Stone Quilt Guild, was holding their quilt show.  Naturally, I had to add it to my things to do.  It was fun to see what people do in other parts of the world.  Their quilts were very nice and often reflected a Caribbean theme.  I was particularly amused by their guild challenge, quilting a cover for a 5 gallon water jug.

2019 Charity Nominations for Raffle Quilt Requested

Every year the Guild supports a nonprofit charity organization to partner with the Guild and be the recipient of our Raffle Quilt fundraiser. If you have a favorite charity that you would like to nominate, the nomination form, guidelines and timeline can be found on the website under Charitable Activities.
Applications are now being received by althea nolan, charitable@northernstarquilters.com.  The ultimate deadline is the March guild meeting.

Still openings in Julie Neu’s workshop – Creative Play – March 21 – sign up now.

Are you in need of a day off?  Do you even remember the last time you played? In this workshop you’ll play in a variety of art mediums (paint, colored pencils, collage, etc.) to help rediscover your creative fire. At the same time, you’ll learn about the creative process and gain techniques you can take back into your regular quilting practice. No prep work necessary, just show up ready to play!  All levels.

President’s Message

Happy New Year to all!  This weather sure is conducive to cuddling up under a nice warm quilt or staying inside to sew.  Quilt registration for a World of Quilts XXXIX opens in just a few weeks and I hope you have been busy working on your entries.  Don’t forget, your quilt does not have to be finished to register it – it only needs to be done by quilt drop off on April 28.  Also you don’t have to register all of your quilts at one time.  So, please if you have a quilt that is ready to be register, do it sooner than later.  It would be a big help to the Registrar to get the entries in early.  She only has about a week after registration closes to get the final list together so she can mail out quilt numbers.  By registering early she can check your entry immediately and avoid having to process so many quilts at the end.

We will be starting the nominating process for the 2018-2019 Board.  Click  here to find the list of positions with brief descriptions. Being on the Board is quite rewarding.  It is a good way to give back to the Guild, meet members, and see what the Guild does.  I encourage you to consider serving.

2018 is going to be a great year for quilting so stop by the library and take a look at all the wonderful books, DVD’s and magazine we have!

We need help locating a couple of books which were left at the December Guild Meeting, on the tables around where the library sets up, before any guild members arrived at the school.  Please email me if you have any information on where they might be. They are Focus on Features and Photo-Inspired Art Quilts.

 Don’t forget to return any books or materials you have when we meet in January. Please return them to a library volunteer or a board member so they don’t get lost – never just leave them on a table even when we are there.

Super Saturday – February 17th 2018 at Yorktown Presbyterian Church
Super Saturday will be here before you know it. Registration continues at the January meeting, after that call or e-mail me with your class request. The fee is $20, payable in advance, for one class for the whole day and lunch.  Eight different classes are offered, as well as an “open sew” session; they are detailed on our website.
It promises to be an exciting and educational day as well as great socializing with fellow guild members. I hope to see many of you there.

Lancaster Trip
Sign-ups for the Lancaster Trip will continue at the January meeting.  Join us March 23-24, 2018 for shopping and a day at the AQS Lancaster Quilt Show.  The cost of the trip is $170 per person based on double occupancy at the hotel.  Detailed itineraries will be available at the meeting.  Please join us!
