Debbie Bein‘s quilt, Oh Say can you Cell (inspired by the cell tower-laden landscape she observed during a road trip along I-80) was juried into “Lay of the Land: The Landscape of the 21st Century,” an international online exhibition featuring the work of 20 artists in a variety of media.  Debbie was subsequently honored further with the Founder’s Choice Award for her work.

In another exciting development, Debbie’s Roots (from her Genome Series) is included as page 28 in Sandra Sidler’s new book, The Studio Quilt (no. 6): State of the Art, a compendium of recent art quilts by 60 fiber artists from around the world.

Quilts by Margaret Phillips and Mayann Weinberg are included in the Jewelry Quilt Project, a special exhibition on view at Quilt Fest of New Jersey in early March.  The Jewelry Quilt project is an international, invitational challenge that interprets jewelry within 30 different cultural categories. Margaret’s and Mayann’s quilts, inspired by Inuit and Central/South American culture, respectively, are shown here.


December 2011

Margaret Phillips has received the Award for Machine Workmanship at “Quilts=Art=Quilts,” a juried exhibition at the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center in Auburn, NY. The exhibition is on view through January 8, 2012.

Two NSQG members are among the award-winners at Houston’s International Quilt Festival in early November: Terri Gavin won Third Place in the “Digital Imagery” category for herNew York Scenes – John Jay Park in WinterEllen Yamaguchi won Second Place in the “Embellished” category for her Starring Beads.

Debbie Bein‘s Allele has been accepted into the annual juried “Form, Not Function” show at the Carnegie Center for Art & History in New Albany, Indiana. The show runs January 6 through March 3, 2012.

Finally, Marie Sugar‘s Colors of Life was awarded First Place in the “Wall Hangings” category at the 25th Annual “Northeast Quilts Unlimited” exhibit, sponsored by View at the View Arts Center in Old Forge, NY.


November 2011

Margaret Phillips’ quilt, Jackie, has been selected to become part of the permanent collection of the Michigan State University Museum at the conclusion of its travel throughout the United States as part of SAQA’s “This is a Quilt” exhibition.

Nancy Mirman’s quilt, Tori Gates, was accepted into SAQA’s show, “Structures in Cloth,” which addresses the theme of architecture in quilts. The show is at the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center in Pueblo, CO through January 21, 2012. The show concludes in April2012 at the Fort Collins Museum of Art.

Georgia Heller’s quilt, Cowgirl Boots, has been juried into Arizona’s Centennial Celebration Quilt Exhibition, 100 Years – 100 Quilts.  The exhibition runs from February through December 2012.

As noted last month, Tamar Drucker’s quilt, When Fog Lifts, (shown here) is included in SAQA’s ”Beyond Comfort” exhibition. The show opened in Birmingham, UK in August and will travel to several venues over the next 18 months.

Renee Fleuranges-Valdes’ quilt, In the Spotlight, was awarded second place in the “Art/Innovative” category at the 25th Annual Northeast Quilts Unlimited Exhibit, which is sponsored by View at the View Arts Center in Old Forge, NY.  The show is on view through November 30.

Finally, Barbara Sferra‘s mixed-media entry for Cloth Paper Scissors magazine’s “Home Sweet Home”challenge has been published in its Nov/Dec issue.



October 2011

Congratulations to Tamar Drucker, whose quilt, When Fog Lifts was in the  SAQA: Beyond- Comfort show in Birmingham UK over the summer.  Tamar’s quilt, Tamara, You are at the Laundromat Tomorrow, won third ribbon in the Israel Quilters Association’s tribute to the 100th anniversary of the kibbutz with a special display at Europe’s premier quilting show.

generation gapof cabbages and kingsDebbie Bein was accepted in the Deep Spaces traveling exhibit, curated by Larkin Van Horn.  The exhibit showcases works of 58 fiber artists from around the world. The exhibit will travel to several venues in the US over the next two years. All proceeds from sales of the CD catalog ww.deep-spaces.com or book www.blurb.com will be donated to Doctors Without Borders.

Also, Debbie’s Generation Gap diptych has been accepted into the Quilts=Art=Quilts show at the Schweinfurth Art Center in Auburn, New York, October 30, 2011 – January 8, 2012.  Other exhibitors include Carolyn Cooney, Tranquillity;  Margaret Phillips, Pink Desert with Roadrunners; and Benedicte Caneill, Units 21: Jungle Fever.

NSQG is well-represented at  Houston’s 2011 Quilts: A World of Beauty (through Nov. 6). Finalists include Norma Schlager, Of Cabbages and Kings (left); Terri Gavin, John Jay Park in Winter;  Ellen Yamaguchi, New York City Light; and Maxine Oliver, Via Appea My Way in the Tactile Architecture Exhibit.


September 2011

Congratulations to Benedicte Caneill, whose work appears on the cover of the August/September issue of Quilting Arts. Benedicte is also the subject of the Artist Q and A inside.

…And also to Nancy Mirman, whose quilt, “Black Magic,” (left) will be one of 30 small quilts on display at the Mahopac Library for the month of September.

Finally, Debbie Bein is pleased to be accepted in the DEEP SPACES traveling exhibit, curated by Larkin Van Horn. The exhibit showcases the works of 58 fiber artists from around the world. All works interpret the show’s “Deep Spaces” theme in an unusual 18″ wide by 45″ high format. The exhibit will travel to several venues in the US over the next two years. Proceeds from the sale of the exhibition catalogue and CD will benefit Doctors without Borders.
