Current Special Interest Groups
Hand Appliqué – Kathy Kaplan and Denise Isherwood co-facilitate this group. Members have a broad range of experience, from experts to beginners, and new members are always welcome. Notes, with pictures as appropriate, are emailed after each meeting to everyone on the email list, so if you are interested in being on the distribution list, give your email address to Kathy or Denise. A wide variety of techniques applicable to any appliqué project will be discussed and demonstrated. Each month, members may bring in their current projects and discuss questions that came up in their construction.
This group meets at 5:45 pm in the Faculty Lounge prior to most monthly Guild meetings.
Art Quilt – Christine Wilhelm facilitates. Meetings include demonstrations of varied art quilt and surface techniques, show and tell, as well as the opportunity to share ideas or ask for feedback. An art quilt challenge to inspire and encourage you to try something new, is once again planned for exhibition at our Quilt Show in May. It is a lively group. We laugh a lot and look forward to having you join us!
This group meets at 5:45 pm in the Library prior to most monthly Guild meetings.
The Sticklers – Carolyn Finn facilitates. Formerly known as the “Dear Jane” group, this group meets monthly on Saturdays at the Apple Bank for Savings, 666 Columbus Avenue, Thornwood, New York. We are all working on projects inspired by the extraordinary Civil War-era quilt made by Jane A. Stickle. Our interpretations reflect a variety of styles and sizes. We’ve found that the quilt is less daunting than it looks and that the individual blocks become much easier when working within a group. Each month, we focus on a different technique and discuss various approaches and options. Newcomers welcome!
Meetings through June 2013: Jan 12, Feb 9, Mar 9, Apr 20, May 18, Jun 22
Longarm Group – Diane Linker facilitates. The group meets at a member’s home one Saturday each month. At each meeting, there is a demo of a longarm technique, discussion of how to quilt tops that the members bring in, show and tell and a great deal of information sharing. The group runs the gamut from beginners to professionals and the meetings are a lot of fun.
2013 Meeting Dates: Jan 5, Feb 2, Mar 2, Apr 6, May 11, Jun 1, Jul 6, Aug 3, Sep 7, Oct 5, Nov 2, and Dec 7
Landscape Techniques Group — Don Gough facilitates. The Landscape SIG is not just about Landscapes! It really is about creating a picture quilt and learning the techniques necessary to make it happen. Even though you can use piecing and appliqué techniques, it is very different from traditional quilting. We are a friendly and interactive group.
This group meets at 6 pm in the Cafeteria prior to most monthly Guild meetings. The group also occasionally meets on Saturdays. The following dates have been scheduled for 2013: Feb 9, Mar 9, Apr 6, May 11.
Anything Goes – Linda Ostrander, founder. A casual, warm, and generally self-facilitating group. Meet for an hour before Guild meetings to stitch…any kind of activity such as quilting, knitting, needlepoint, beading, embroidery, crochet…whatever you like. Bring your project or come for pleasure, friendship, motivation, and inspiration. If you want to teach a technique, you have a ready-made audience. If you need help with your project, someone will offer guidance. This is a casual activity and there’s no commitment. Come every time or whenever you can — or simply stop by to see what we’re up to!
The group meets at 5:45 before Guild meetings at the back of the cafeteria.
