This committee was created in 2002 when NSQG received a request from Katonah Elementary School to help children make quilts to donate to Friends of Karen. The mission is to support the Guild’s purpose “to promote interest in, and encourage participation in, the art of quilting” (By-Laws, Article II). Our goal is to keep the folk art of quilting alive and well for the future through the education of children.
By joining this committee, you become a member in a pool of many volunteers who are contacted by e-mail or posted mail when an assignment is requested. Past job descriptions have included: sewing quilt kits and/or quilting on your own, attending daytime committee workshops at quilters’ homes to prep for children’s activities and participating in hands on daytime activities with children. The amount of involvement is your choice on whether to volunteer as assignments are posted.
This fall a new committee pool will be formed. If you are interested in joining us, please contact me or check Quilt Education for Children on your new NSQG Membership form.
a picture worth a thousand words… why we volunteer.
A note from Gwen Salmo, Special Events Coordinator, Friends of Karen:
“Mariely is the little girl on the far left, with her cousins. She has Rhabdomyosarcoma. She is 6 years old.
She was SO happy with the quilt. Her social worker told me that Mariely
kept putting her hand against all the hands of the quilt.”
The expression on this child’s face reflects all of the wonderful quilts that Katonah Elementary School has donated to Friends of Karen for many years.
